Scaling and Root Planing

Restore Periodontal Health with Scaling and Root Planing

Scaling and root planing, often referred to as a deep cleaning, is one of the most effective treatments for early-stage gum disease. At Brimhall Family Dentistry, we understand that patients may feel anxious about this procedure, but it’s an important step toward restoring the health of your gums and protecting your overall health.

Gum disease doesn’t just affect your smile—it impacts your entire body. Healthy gums prevent harmful bacteria from entering your bloodstream, which reduces your risk for serious health conditions linked to periodontal disease.

When Is Scaling and Root Planing Necessary

We may recommend scaling and root planing if you experience:

  • Gums that are receding or pulling away from your teeth
  • Tartar buildup extending below the gumline and reaching the tooth roots
  • Persistent inflammation, swelling, or bleeding in your gums

If gum disease is left untreated, it can lead to tooth loss and increase your risk for other health issues.

What to Expect During Scaling and Root Planing

Although scaling and root planing is a non-surgical procedure, we typically use local anesthesia to keep you comfortable. Once the area is numb, your dentist or hygienist will use special tools, such as a curette or an ultrasonic device, to:

  • Carefully remove plaque and tartar from beneath the gumline
  • Smooth the tooth roots to help your gums reattach and reduce areas where bacteria can hide

Most deep cleanings are completed in one to two visits, depending on the extent of the gum disease.

Post-Treatment Care and Recovery

After scaling and root planing, you may experience mild discomfort, gum tenderness, or slight bleeding for a short time. To aid your recovery and promote healing:

  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and gentle dental floss
  • Rinse with an antibacterial or medicated mouthwash as recommended
  • Avoid smoking for several days to give your gums time to heal
  • Maintain excellent oral hygiene at home
  • Attend any follow-up visits so we can monitor your healing

Precautions for Certain Health Conditions

You should consult with your physician and dentist before treatment if you:

  • Have a heart condition and are at risk for endocarditis
  • Have a weakened immune system
  • Have recently undergone major surgery
  • Have artificial joints or other prosthetics
