Dental Sealants

Protecting Your Smile with Dental Sealants

Dental sealants are a simple and effective way to protect your teeth from cavities. At Brimhall Family Dentistry, we recommend sealants for patients who are at a higher risk of developing tooth decay, especially on the back teeth where grooves and pits can trap food and plaque.

A dental sealant is a thin, clear or white plastic coating applied to the chewing surface of your molars. It acts as a barrier, sealing out food, plaque, and bacteria to prevent cavities from forming. Sealants are a preventive treatment that doesn’t require drilling or altering the natural tooth structure and can last between 5 to 10 years with good oral hygiene and regular cleanings.

How Dental Sealants Help Protect Your Teeth

Dental sealants can:

  • Provide a protective barrier on teeth that are vulnerable to cavities
  • Keep out bacteria and food particles
  • Seal and protect grooves, pits, and fissures that are hard to clean with a toothbrush

Our molars have deep grooves and uneven surfaces where food and plaque easily collect. Even with thorough brushing and flossing, it can be difficult to clean these areas completely. Sealants create a smooth surface that prevents bacteria from settling in, making it easier to maintain healthy teeth.

While sealants are commonly recommended for children and teens, they’re also a smart preventive option for adults with healthy back teeth that have no decay or fillings.

What to Expect During the Dental Sealant Procedure

The sealant procedure is quick, painless, and typically completed in just one office visit. Here’s what you can expect:

  • First, your dentist or hygienist will clean the teeth receiving sealants to ensure no food or plaque is trapped underneath.
  • The teeth are dried, and a mild acid solution is applied to roughen the surface of the enamel. This helps the sealant bond securely.
  • After rinsing and drying the teeth again, the sealant is painted onto the chewing surface.
  • The sealant usually hardens on its own, but your dentist may use a special curing light to speed up the process.
Once the sealant is set, you can eat and drink as normal.
