Our Top Tips for a Healthy Smile
1. Brush Properly
Brushing your teeth at least twice a day is essential—but how you brush makes a big difference. Here’s how to do it right:
- Use a soft-bristled toothbrush that’s gentle on your gums.
- Brush all surfaces of your teeth, including the front, back, chewing surfaces, tongue, and roof of your mouth.
- Don’t brush too hard, as this can wear away gum tissue and enamel.
- Wait at least 30 minutes after eating before brushing, especially if you’ve had acidic foods or drinks.
- Replace your toothbrush every 1-2 months (or sooner if the bristles are frayed).
2. Floss Daily—Before You Brush
Flossing removes plaque and food particles from between your teeth and under the gumline—areas your toothbrush can’t reach. Flossing helps prevent gum disease and tooth decay and should be done at least once a day. For best results, floss before brushing to loosen debris and make brushing more effective.
3. Rinse with Mouthwash
While not a replacement for brushing or flossing, mouthwash can reduce bacteria, freshen your breath, and add extra protection against cavities. Choose a mouthwash with fluoride for added defense against tooth decay.
4. Avoid Tobacco Products
Smoking or chewing tobacco increases your risk for gum disease, tooth loss, and oral cancer. If you currently use tobacco products, we encourage you to speak with your healthcare provider about quitting. Your oral—and overall—health will thank you.
5. Limit Sugary Foods and Drinks
Bacteria that cause plaque thrive on sugars from food and drinks. Cutting back on sugary snacks, sodas, and desserts can make a big difference in preventing cavities and gum disease.
6. Eat a Balanced, Nutritious Diet
A healthy diet supports healthy teeth and gums. Focus on whole foods rich in calcium, vitamin D, and other essential nutrients. If your diet lacks key vitamins or minerals, consider adding supplements—but always check with your healthcare provider first.
7. Schedule Regular Dental Checkups and Cleanings
Routine dental visits are your best defense against dental problems. We recommend scheduling checkups and professional cleanings at least twice a year. Regular visits allow us to catch potential issues early and keep your teeth and gums in top shape.
