What Are Porcelain Crowns?

Porcelain crowns are tooth-shaped caps that cover a damaged or weakened tooth. They’re custom-crafted to match the color, shape, and size of your surrounding teeth, making them virtually indistinguishable from the rest of your smile. Porcelain crowns are an ideal solution for:

  • Badly damaged or decayed teeth
  • Teeth weakened by large fillings or root canals
  • Missing teeth (as part of a dental bridge or implant restoration)
  • Improving the appearance of misshapen or discolored teeth
  • Restoring bite function and preventing further damage
  • Patients with metal sensitivities or allergies

Why Choose 100% Porcelain Crowns?

In the past, patients had to choose between strong metal-based crowns and natural-looking ceramic ones. Fortunately, modern porcelain crowns offer the best of both worlds—exceptional durability with the appearance of natural teeth. Here’s why patients love them:

  • Natural Appearance: Porcelain mimics the translucency of natural enamel, blending seamlessly with your smile.
  • No Dark Lines: Unlike porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns, all-porcelain crowns won’t leave a dark line at the gumline.
  • Biocompatible: Porcelain is well-tolerated by gums and surrounding tissue.
  • Strong and Durable: Today’s porcelain materials are tough, lasting 10 to 15 years or longer with proper care.
  • Stain Resistant: Porcelain crowns resist staining from coffee, tea, and wine.

What to Expect from the Porcelain Crown Procedure

Getting a porcelain crown typically takes two visits to our Fort Collins office.

First Visit: Preparation and Impressions

  • We begin by examining your tooth and taking digital X-rays. In some cases, a root canal may be recommended before crown placement if there is severe decay or infection.
  • Once your tooth is ready, we’ll gently reshape it to make space for the crown. If a large portion of the tooth is missing, we may use filling material to build up the structure for better support.
  • Next, we take precise impressions of your prepared tooth and surrounding teeth. These are sent to our dental lab, where your custom crown is carefully crafted.
  • While you wait (typically 1-2 weeks), we’ll place a temporary crown to protect your tooth.

Second Visit: Crown Placement

  • At your follow-up visit, we’ll remove your temporary crown and check the fit, color, and bite of your new porcelain crown.
  • Once everything looks and feels right, we’ll permanently bond the crown in place using strong dental cement.
  • As a precaution, we recommend avoiding sticky or chewy foods for the first 24 hours to ensure a secure fit.

Some patients may experience mild sensitivity after the procedure, which typically resolves within a few days to a few weeks.

How to Care for Your Porcelain Crown

Porcelain crowns are easy to care for. Treat them just like your natural teeth by following these tips:

  • Brush twice daily and floss once a day
  • Schedule regular dental checkups and cleanings
  • Avoid chewing on hard objects like ice, pens, or fingernails
  • Wear a nightguard if you grind or clench your teeth while sleeping
With good oral hygiene and healthy habits, your crown can last for many years.
